Description

Summary:

As providers across Texas already know, our state lacks resources for child and adolescent mental health. Child psychiatry, psychological testing, and therapy services are deficient even in our most populated Texas counties. Here’s where we come in. We are CPAN – the Child Psychiatry Access Network. As a regional team of child and adolescent psychiatrists and licensed professional counselors, we are here to support PCPs across Texas who provide care for children and adolescents with mental health needs.

Presenters:

Katherine Kerr, MD, FAAP
Tiya Johnson, MD
Jamon Blood, DO
Elisabeth Hooker, MA, LPC
Wylie Martin, MS, LPC-S
Laura Young, BSN, RN, PHN

Other relevant information:

Program Overview -- Texas CPAN is a state-funded child and adolescent mental health initiative that provides real-time psychiatric consultation, continuing education, and assistance in identifying difficult to find mental health referrals and resources to all Texas primary care providers (PCPs) caring for children and adolescents. The program was funded by the Texas legislature in 2019 and went live in 2020. There are no fees to the provider, clinic, patient, or health plan for CPAN services.

Program Specifics -- CPAN services assist providers with the bio-psycho-social approach necessary to meet the mental health needs of children and adolescents. These services include: (1) real-time, child psychiatry consultation on differential diagnosis, medication recommendations and management assistance, and complex cases, (2) experienced therapist assistance from licensed professional counselors for needs such as identifying appropriate therapies, behavioral health and safety planning, and validated mental health referrals and resources (personalized to the needs of each patient), (3) a toolbox of assessment and screening tools for a wide array of mental health concerns (e.g. depression, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, etc.), and (4) support for clinics who would like more information on developing a practice crisis intervention plan. Additionally, CPAN focuses on building the knowledge base and confidence of Texas PCPs through continuing education through CMEs, Grand Rounds, and Project ECHO sessions via video conference. All of these services and more are available by calling a single telephone number and, again, all at no cost to you or your patients.
