Title: Impact of Social Isolation on Dementia

Dementia is a real factor in the lives of many individuals and families with a recognized mortality as the sixth leading cause of death, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) was identified by one in 10 people aged 45 and older and of those 41% indicate they had to give up on their day-to-day activities based on 2023 data from the CDC. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, of the estimated 10% of the population aged 65 and older with AD, there are an estimated 81% who are older than 75 years of age. This presentation will explore the following aspects as they relate to dementia: social isolation, covid-19 impact, dementia symptoms, and behaviors, education and understanding of dementia, safety, and coping with dementia will be discussed.
Presenter: Dr. Tanya Schlemmer, DNP, MHA,MSN-Ed, AGACNP-BC, FNP-C, CCRN-CMC, RN-BC
Dr. Schlemmer is a Clinical Associate Professor of Graduate Nursing at the University of Texas at Tyler. She is dual certified as an Adult-Gerontologic Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner and is also nationally certified in the areas of Home Health Nursing, and Adult Critical Care Nursing with a Cardiac Medicine subspecialty certification. She has more than 20 years of teaching experience and has been teaching at UT Tyler since 2016, in the Family Nurse Practitioner program. Dr. Schlemmer has been a nurse for 40 years and has 20+ years of experience as a nurse practitioner. She has extensive clinical experience in various areas of nursing, patient care management, nursing education and teaching. She has participated in research studies in the areas of caregiver burden, post stroke fatigue and caregiver burden, social isolation and Dementia, Caregiver burden for Dementia, oxygen therapy safety, the evaluation of oxygen need, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), oral anticoagulation therapy, Nurse Practitioner Occupational Burnout, and Nurse Practitioner preceptor issues. Dr. Schlemmer has published works on several of the above-listed topics. She is a volunteer educator for the Alzheimer’s Association in the North Dallas area. She is a member and volunteer for Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society and Texas Nurse Practitioner’s. Dr. Schlemmer is also a volunteer for the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an item writer and an item reviewer for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification exam.

Learner Outcome:
1. 80% of participants will identify at least one potential risk associated with social isolation and dementia.
2. 80% of participants will identify at least one component of proactive management to prevent social isolation in dementia.
Accreditation:
Learners will be awarded 1 Contact Hour (which includes 1 hour towards Geriatrics). Completion of the course and evaluation are required.
