Title: Leucovorin in Autism: An Evidence Based and Clinically Informed Approach

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are increasingly caring for children and families seeking treatment options for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including requests for information regarding folinic acid (leucovorin) as a therapeutic approach for ASD and related neurodevelopmental conditions. However, many APRNs report limited formal education on cerebral folate deficiency, folate receptor alpha autoantibodies, and the evidence-based clinical decision-making required to determine appropriate candidates for treatment. Additionally, there is insufficient understanding of the distinctions between folinic acid and other folate formulations, as well as limited familiarity with ordering and interpreting folate receptor antibody testing and safely dosing or titrating leucovorin. These knowledge gaps contribute to inconsistent clinical evaluation, missed opportunities for early recognition of cerebral folate deficiency, and uncertainty when counseling families regarding treatment considerations.

Learner Outcome:
At least 80% of learners will demonstrate increased knowledge related to identifying cerebral folate deficiency, interpreting folate-related laboratory testing, and safely evaluating the use of folinic acid therapy in appropriate pediatric patients, as evidenced by achieving a score of 80% or higher on the post-test.
