The "Evolution of Pain" presentation offers an updated overview of pain management and the interpretation of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) data. This program will cover the standard classifications of pain and the factors driving opioid use. It will also identify the biological, psychological, and social risk factors that contribute to chronic pain and demonstrate how to use the PMP to analyze patient utilization patterns. Finally, the presentation will differentiate between Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), while providing dosing guidelines for patients transitioning to buprenorphine therapy.
Presenter: Dr. K Ashley Garling, Pharm D
Dr. Garling graduated Rho Chi with honors from the MCV/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. She is now a clinical assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, serving as a communication, media, and patient engagement specialist. Dr. Garling is the principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI for research projects in community pharmacy settings spanning telehealth, HIV PrEP, mental health, patient counseling, and medication adherence. She is the president of the Capital Area Pharmacist Association, and is a Public Policy Council Member of the Texas Pharmacist Association.

Learner Outcomes:
Learners will demonstrate knowledge gained from this activity by identifying two (2) evidence-based insights (knowledge pearls) on pain classification, risk factors, PMP reporting and/or medication strategy they intend to integrate into their clinical practice.
Accreditation:
Learners will be awarded 2 Contact Hours, including 1 hour towards Opioids, 1 hour towards Pharmacology and 2 hours towards the PMP requirement. Completion of the course and evaluation are required.
