Title: Beyond the Vital Signs: Maternal Early Warning Systems and What Every Nurse Practitioner Can Learn from Them
Description:
The content is based on current evidence, national clinical practice guidelines, and expert consensus on the recognition and management of maternal clinical deterioration. The activity describes the physiologic rationale for pregnancy-specific early warning criteria and the four leading causes of preventable severe maternal morbidity (obstetric hemorrhage; sepsis; preeclampsia with severe-range hypertension; and cardiopulmonary dysfunction); compares the structure and evidence base of maternal early warning systems (MEWC and MEWT) with early warning tools used in other patient populations (NEWS2, MEWS, and PEWS); and applies principles of structured escalation and response reliability — including time-critical pharmacologic management and the decision to escalate or transfer — across nurse practitioner practice settings. Content is presented free of commercial bias and reflects the best available evidence.
